Weekend idea
Weekend in Baie de Somme
A simple two-day route with villages, bay views, a nature outing and enough room to adjust the plan.
Two days in Baie de Somme are not enough to see everything. That is fine. A good weekend here works best with a few clear stops, some flexibility and no need to chase every tourist sign.
Friday evening: arrive without doing too much
If you arrive on Friday evening, do not plan a major visit. Settle in, get a feel for the area, check where to have coffee the next morning and take a short walk if the light is good. Baie de Somme is easier to enjoy when the trip does not start with a long checklist.
For accommodation, Saint-Valery-sur-Somme and Le Crotoy are practical choices for a first stay. Cayeux-sur-Mer and quieter villages also work if you want more coast or more peace.
Saturday morning: Saint-Valery-sur-Somme and the bay
Start with Saint-Valery-sur-Somme. The quays, narrow streets, upper town and viewpoints give a good first impression. Take time to walk, go up towards the old town, come back down and follow the water. Some streets are steep, but the views usually justify the effort.
Morning is often a good time to avoid the busiest hours. Keep a flexible pace: coffee, a walk, a few photos and a break. The aim is not to see everything before noon, but to understand the atmosphere.
Depending on the day, a morning market can also fit into the plan. Check market days in Saint-Valery, Le Crotoy, Cayeux or Abbeville before building the morning around it. Baie de Somme markets.
Saturday afternoon: Le Crotoy or Cayeux, depending on your mood
For the afternoon, keep it simple. Choose Le Crotoy for beach, sea wall, port and open light over the bay. Choose Cayeux-sur-Mer for the seafront, pebbles, beach huts and a stronger coastal feel.
Do not try to fit both in at all costs. It is possible, but not always useful. Leave something for another trip.
Sunday morning: seals, Marquenterre or a longer walk
Sunday morning can be used for a nature outing. If seal watching is your priority, check conditions, tide times and guided options. From places such as Le Hourdel, seals can sometimes be seen from a distance, but observation must remain respectful.
Another option is the Parc du Marquenterre, especially if you like birds, marsh landscapes and observation hides. Again, check opening times and conditions before planning the day around it.
Sunday afternoon: slow down before leaving
Before leaving, keep one simple moment: a short walk, a last viewpoint, a pause facing the bay. It is often more useful than adding one extra stop.
If you are leaving by car, think ahead about departure times in season. Traffic around popular places can build up quickly at the end of a weekend.
Suggested two-day plan
- Day 1 morning: Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, quays, old town and a walk by the bay.
- Day 1 afternoon: Le Crotoy for the beach or Cayeux-sur-Mer for the seafront and pebbles.
- Day 2 morning: guided seal outing, distant observation from Le Hourdel, or Parc du Marquenterre.
- Day 2 afternoon: easy pause, short walk, return without adding too many stops.
What to plan before leaving
- Comfortable shoes, even for a quiet weekend.
- A windproof jacket: the bay is open to Channel weather.
- Tide times if you are planning a nature outing.
- Official schedules for the train, the park or guided visits.
- A rainy-day plan, such as a cafe, bookshop, museum or rest.
Where to stay for this weekend
For this type of route, Saint-Valery-sur-Somme is very practical if you want a lively, central base on the southern side. Le Crotoy works well if you prefer the beach atmosphere and the northern side of the bay. Cayeux-sur-Mer is a good option for a more coastal stay, especially if you like long seafront walks.
If nature is your priority, also look near Marquenterre. You will be farther from the liveliest areas, but closer to birdwatching outings and quieter landscapes. As always, the best choice depends on your real plans.
