Visit Le Crotoy in Baie de Somme: harbour, beach, tourist railway, Jules Verne, parking and practical tips for planning a day.

Le Crotoy is easy to visit on foot around the harbour, the centre and the beach. A day is enough to discover the northern side of Baie de Somme, plan a simple walk and, depending on the timetable, take the tourist railway.

The village gets busy during weekends and school holidays. To avoid spending too much time looking for a parking space, arrive in the morning and check the train timetable, market day and tide times before leaving.

Information checked in June 2026: tourist railway services, exhibitions and parking rules may change. Check official information before planning the day around a precise time.

What to see in Le Crotoy in one day

For a first visit, start with the harbour and the quays. You can then reach the centre, pass near Saint-Pierre church and continue towards the beach and the Jules-Noiret promenade. These stops are close to each other and make it possible to organize the day without taking the car again.

Two or three hours Harbour, centre, Saint-Pierre church and a walk along the beach.

A full day Add the market if it is taking place, lunch and one activity booked in advance.

With children Keep time for the beach and check the train or temporary exhibition timetable.

Start with the harbour and the quays

The harbour gives a first view of Le Crotoy and its link with the bay. Boats, quays and changing water levels alter the look of the area during the day. Take a few minutes to look across the bay before heading into the centre.

The harbour is close to shops and places for lunch. If you come on market day, expect more people in the centre. Our guide to markets in Baie de Somme helps you check days and places before leaving.

Walk to Le Crotoy beach

Le Crotoy beach faces south and looks into the bay. The landscape changes a lot with the tide. At low tide, the water can be far away and a large part of the foreshore becomes visible. Check tide times if you want to see the bay at a specific stage.

The Jules-Noiret promenade lets you continue on foot without entering the bay. Do not go alone onto the foreshore to attempt a crossing or reach a distant point. For a walk in the bay, book a professional guide who knows the tide and the safe passages.

<img alt="Harbour of Le Crotoy in Baie de Somme" class="wp-image-0"/ loading="eager" fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" src="{{CROTOY_EN_INLINE_IMAGE_URL}}">
The harbour is a good starting point before walking towards the centre and the beach.

Take the Baie de Somme Railway

Le Crotoy is one of the termini of the Baie de Somme Railway. Depending on the operating calendar, trains connect Le Crotoy, Noyelles-sur-Mer and Saint-Valery-sur-Somme. Check the timetable and book ahead when high attendance is expected.

The train can take up a large part of the day. Before booking, check departure and return times, then choose what you still want to keep in Le Crotoy. The calendar and tickets are available on the official Baie de Somme Railway website.

Stop by Saint-Pierre church

Saint-Pierre church is in the centre of Le Crotoy. It keeps elements linked to the village’s maritime history, including ex-votos. Check whether it is open when you pass and respect any services taking place.

Jules Verne and Le Crotoy

Jules Verne stayed in Le Crotoy and owned a boat there. He worked on several texts in the village, including Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas. This explains the references to the writer in the village and some events organized in 2026.

Temporary exhibition in 2026: a Lego exhibition about Jules Verne and the underwater world is announced from 13 June to 1 November 2026 at Salle Colette. It is scheduled from Wednesday to Sunday, 10:30 am to 12:30 pm and 2 pm to 6 pm. Announced prices: free up to age 6, EUR 3 from 7 to 12, and EUR 5 from age 13. Check opening times and prices with the organizer before going.

What to do around Le Crotoy

If you stay several days on the northern side of the bay, you can plan a visit to the Parc du Marquenterre, a guided nature outing or a stop in nearby villages. Do not add too many long activities to the same day: the train, the park and a guided bay walk each take several hours.

To plan a wider stay, you can also read our guide to villages to visit in Baie de Somme and our Baie de Somme weekend itinerary.

Parking and practical tips

Parking can take time during weekends, school holidays and events. Arrive in the morning if you have a booking or a train departure. Read signs on site for zones, prices and authorized parking duration.

Where to find free parking in Baie de Somme: Saint-Valery, Le Crotoy, Cayeux, Le Hourdel, Abbeville and arrival tips.

Finding free parking in the Baie de Somme is possible, but not everywhere, not all year round, and rarely close to the quay or the beach. The most useful thing is therefore to know where to park before arriving, and when to accept paying for a better-located parking spot.

Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, Le Crotoy, Cayeux-sur-Mer, Le Hourdel, and Abbeville do not have the same parking rules. Some areas offer free parking within a reasonable distance, while others mainly operate with paid parking in season or with a blue zone. For a trip towards the northern coast, also check parking in Fort-Mahon-Plage, especially in season.

Information checked in June 2026: Parking rules may change depending on the municipality, the season, events, and construction. Before a visit in the height of summer, on a weekend, or on market day, always check the official municipal page.

The practical summary

Location

Option to consider

To know

Maps

Saint-Valery-sur-Somme

Canal parking

Free, no time limit, 24/7.

Saint-Valery-sur-Somme: aim for the canal parking lot

In Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, the simplest free parking to remember is the canal parking lot. The municipality indicates that it is free, without time limit, accessible 7 days a week and 24 hours a day, at the entrance of the town on the Abbeville road side.

It’s the right choice if you are coming for a half-day, a market, a walk on the quays, or a visit without time constraints. In return, you have to accept being at the city entrance. Count on about 15 to 25 minutes on foot depending on the point you are aiming for, or use the free shuttle La Sauterelle when it is running.

The center of Saint-Valery is paid every day of the year during the hours indicated by the municipality. For a very short stop, the first 45 minutes are free once a day. For a proper visit, the canal parking generally remains simpler.

At what time to arrive In summer, during long weekends or a market Sunday, aiming to arrive before 10 a.m. is still more comfortable. After 11 a.m., you can still park, but walking or taking the shuttle often becomes the better option.

If you come in a converted vehicle, rather read the guide dedicated to motorhomes in the Baie de Somme. The rules are not the same between parking for a few hours and staying overnight on site.

Le Crotoy: little free parking, but a city entrance parking lot is useful

In Le Crotoy, paid parking applies from April 1 to October 31 throughout the town, according to the zones indicated by the city. The parking lots closest to the beach and the casino are also the most expensive, and they remain in high demand on sunny days.

To limit the budget, the city entrance parking, via the Rue road, is often more reasonable: the municipality announces 3 euros for 13 hours of parking between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. It is not free, but it avoids driving around the streets near the dike.

For a short visit, the central area remains convenient if you accept the rate. For a day at the beach, market, or walk, it’s better to aim for the city entrance and walk a bit. Depending on your pace, allow about 10 to 20 minutes to reach the most frequented areas.

Cayeux-sur-Mer: free inland, paid on the waterfront

In Cayeux-sur-Mer, the waterfront is paid from April 1 to September 30. The tourist office specifies that parking remains free in other streets, except for the areas listed around Boulevard du Général Sizaire, certain nearby streets, and Place du Général de Gaulle.

In practice, if you want to avoid paid parking, you need to look further away from the sea and be willing to walk a few minutes. For a family with young children, beach equipment, or uncertain weather, paying near the waterfront can still be simpler.

For a walk on the boardwalk or a quick stop, start by looking at the area center / streets further back. On sunny summer days, it’s better to arrive before late morning.

Le Hourdel: come early when the tide draws people

Le Hourdel works differently. The municipality of Cayeux indicates that parking is paid in the hamlet all year round. It’s a very targeted area: many visitors come for the dike, the White Road, or seal watching.

The arrival time mainly depends on the tide. When conditions are favorable for seal observation, the crowd increases faster. If you want to find a spot more easily, arrive before the start of the observation window, not when everyone is already looking for a place.

Before leaving, also consult our guide on the Pointe du Hourdel. It explains where to observe the seals from a distance and why tide times matter as much as parking.

Abbeville: free blue zone, but disc required

In Abbeville, parking indicated by the tourist office is free in the blue zone, with a disc required, from Monday to Saturday during the announced hours, excluding Sundays and public holidays. There are two durations: 1 hour or 2 hours depending on the zone.

It is convenient for a short visit to the center, a coffee, a market, or a stop around Saint-Vulfran. For a full half-day, check the maximum duration of the zone where you park. Free does not necessarily mean unlimited.

If you are willing to walk a little, also look at the Vauban Boulevard and the streets set back around the center. Depending on the available location, this allows you to avoid limitations related to the blue zone while remaining reasonable on foot to reach the town center.

Which parking to choose depending on your visit?

Visiting Saint-Valery Canal parking if you have time to walk. Paid center parking only for a short stop or mobility constraint.

Going to Le Crotoy City entrance parking to limit the cost. Beach/casino area if you want to be as close as possible.

Seeing the seals At Hourdel, it is better to adjust your arrival time to the tide schedule. Arriving early is often more important than the choice of parking.

For market days, allow extra time. The markets in Saint-Valery and Le Crotoy can affect traffic and the availability of spaces. The guide of markets in the Baie de Somme helps to choose the right day before leaving.

Choose a campsite in Baie de Somme according to your trip: areas, beaches, villages, services and a non-exhaustive selection.

Camping in the Baie de Somme can be very convenient if you choose the right area from the start. Le Crotoy, Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, Cayeux-sur-Mer, Pendé or the hinterland do not offer the same stay, nor the same daily routes.

Before booking, the most useful thing is not to look for “the best campsite” in general, but to know where to camp in the Baie de Somme according to your plan: walks in the bay, beach, cycling, seals, Marquenterre Park, stay with children or arrival without using the car too much. If you are looking for a wide beach on the northern coast, also consider a stay around Fort-Mahon and Quend.

Information checked in June 2026:availability, rates, services, pet rules, swimming pools, activities and cancellation conditions change depending on the season and type of accommodation. Always check the campsite’s details before booking.

Compare campgrounds in the Baie de Somme

You can check the available offers around the Baie de Somme on our partner site Campings.com.

Where to camp in the Baie de Somme depending on your stay?

The choice of area greatly changes the pace of the stay. Sleeping in Le Crotoy makes access to the northern shore and the Marquenterre easier. Saint-Valery-sur-Somme is suitable if you want a lively village, restaurants, and the bay train. Cayeux-sur-Mer and Le Hourdel are more suited to large pebble beaches, walks to the point, and nature outings.

Pendé and the communes around Saint-Valery can be interesting if you are looking for more peace or if you want to explore several villages. The hinterland is better suited for nature stays, larger accommodations, or for those planning to travel a lot by car.

Area

Main interest

To check before booking

Le Crotoy

North shore, Marquenterre, beach, cycling.

Actual walking distance to the center, swimming pool, pets, parking.

Saint-Valery-sur-Somme

Lively village, restaurants, train, access to the upper town.

Access to the campsite, noise during the season, shuttles or walk to the center.

Cayeux-sur-Mer / Le Hourdel

Pebble beach, cabins, Pointe du Hourdel, distant observation.

Wind, beach access, on-site services, need for a car.

Slope / back bay

Quiet, quick access to several villages, more relaxed stay.

Daily journeys, nearby shops, bike or car rental.

Beauchamps / Bresle valley

Nature option or more unusual accommodation.

Distance to the bay, travel time, on-site activities.

Selection of campsites in Baie de Somme

The selection below is not exhaustive and does not constitute a ranking. It is mainly intended to compare sectors, services, and possible uses. Booking links go through our partner when the establishment is available, but practical information has been cross-checked with the campsite websites, the tourist office, and recent reviews whenever possible.

Around Saint-Valery-sur-Somme

Camping Le Walric is located in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, about a 10-minute walk from the old town or the port according to the tourist office. The site has an indoor heated swimming pool, playgrounds, a tennis court, a snack bar, and a bread depot. Reviews consulted give a rather positive impression of the location and cleanliness, with some usual remarks to check depending on the chosen accommodation: linen, equipment, and booking details.

Camping Paradis – La Croix l’Abbé is also located in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme. The address is more aimed at a family stay with on-site services, entertainment, and a water area. Before booking, be sure to check the current conditions: the campsite has undergone a takeover and recent work reported in reviews, which can change the level of services depending on the period.

On the Le Crotoy side and north bank

Flower Camping Les Aubépines is located in Saint-Firmin, in the commune of Le Crotoy. The campsite highlights shaded pitches, mobile homes, an indoor pool, and outdoor slides. Recent reviews are generally positive, particularly regarding the cleanliness of the accommodations, with more mixed feedback on the entertainment. It is a suitable option if you want to stay on the north bank side, close to the beaches and the Marquenterre Park.

Camping Le Tarteron, in Le Crotoy, often appears in searches for a equipped stay on the north bank side. The reviews mainly emphasize the calm, cleanliness, and the pool. It may be suitable if you are looking for a family campsite without being directly in the hustle and bustle of the center, provided you plan trips to the beach or the village.

Camping La Prairie, in Le Crotoy, may interest those who want to stay close to the town center and for walking outings. However, check the rules regarding animals and the type of accommodation before booking: according to the displayed offers, not all lodgings are necessarily suitable for stays with a dog.

<img alt="Crotoy Beach at low tide in the Baie de Somme"/ loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://vacancesenbaiedesomme.fr/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/plage-crotoy-camping-baie-de-somme.webp">
Le Crotoy remains a convenient area if you want to alternate camping, beach, cycling, and outings to the Marquenterre.

Cayeux-sur-Mer, Pendé, and the back bay

Camping Paradis Les Galets de la Mollière is located in Cayeux-sur-Mer, between the Hâble d’Ault nature reserve and Le Hourdel. The campsite highlights a heated pool, activities, and walking access to the beach according to official information. Recent reviews are rather good regarding the welcome and family atmosphere. It’s a logical option if your stay revolves around Cayeux, the beach cabins, the boardwalk, and trips to Le Hourdel.

Camping Sites et Paysages – Camping de la Baie, in Pendé, is situated a little set back from the seaside. The reviews consulted particularly emphasize the calm, the welcome, and the cleanliness. It’s an area to consider if you want to avoid the busiest areas while keeping Saint-Valery-sur-Somme and the bay fairly close.

Camping Domaine du Lieu Dieu, in Beauchamps, is not on the bay. The estate is more oriented towards the countryside, bodies of water, outdoor activities, and unusual accommodations. The reviews consulted mention an appreciated natural setting. It is an option to consider if you are looking for a greener stay and if traveling to the coast does not bother you.

Which area to choose for a first stay?

Without driving too much Saint-Valery or Le Crotoy if you want restaurants, walks, and easy departures.

With children First look at the pool, water area, playground, and distance to planned outings.

With a dog Filter the accommodations that accept animals, then check the rules specific to each lodging.

For a first stay, Saint-Valery-sur-Somme and Le Crotoy are the easiest choices to understand. You are close to the best-known villages, restaurants, walks, and major landmarks of the bay. However, these areas can be more in demand during the season.

Cayeux-sur-Mer is more suitable if you want a stay focused more on the pebble beach, the cabins, and Le Hourdel. Pendé and the back bay are calmer, but often require a bit more organization for shopping, restaurants, or evening outings.

Camping, mobile home, or pitch: what to check?

Some establishments mainly offer mobile homes, while others also have pitches or accept caravans and motorhomes. So you need to check the type of accommodation before comparing prices. A very well-located campsite may not be suitable if you are specifically looking for a tent pitch.

Also look at the specific conditions: pets allowed or not, heating, covered terrace, parking, linen included, cleaning, wifi, bread delivery, covered pool, activities, and opening dates. In the Baie de Somme, the weather can change quickly; a covered pool or indoor area can be important with children.

And if you are coming by motorhome?

Camping can be a good solution if you are coming in a motorhome and want services, electricity, sanitary facilities, or a fixed base for several nights. But not all campsites offer the same conditions for recreational vehicles.

If your main concern is parking, rather check our guide dedicated to motorhomes in the Baie de Somme. It deals more specifically with the area of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, parking lots, and checks to make before arriving.

When to book a campsite in the Baie de Somme?

For school holidays, the May long weekends, extended weekends, and summer, it is better to look early. The best-located campsites or family accommodations often go faster than standard pitches. Off-season, you will sometimes have more leeway, but you need to check the opening dates and the services actually available.

If you are coming for the Marquenterre, the seals, or the high tides, do not choose only the campsite. Also check the tide schedules, the distance to the starting points of walks, the driving time, and the parking possibilities.

Visit Baie de Somme with a dog: beaches, walks, leads, protected areas and rules to check before leaving.

Coming to the Baie de Somme with your dog is possible, but you need to prepare a bit more than just a simple walk on the beach. The rules vary depending on the municipalities, sensitive areas, and the season. The most important thing is to check where dogs are allowed, where a leash is mandatory, and which areas remain forbidden.

The bay is a highly frequented natural area, with beaches, dikes, nesting zones, salt meadows, and protected areas. In many areas, a leashed dog does not pose any particular difficulty, but some spaces remain off-limits, even with a leash.

Information checked in June 2026: Municipal decrees, access to beaches, and rules in natural areas may change. Before leaving, check the signs on-site and the official pages of the municipalities or visited sites.

Can you visit the Baie de Somme with a dog?

Yes, provided you choose the right places. Villages, quays, certain beaches, and several easy walks can be done with a dog. Le Crotoy clearly communicates a section of the beach accessible to domestic animals between the Grève alley and the Maye parking lot. In other areas, you must check local rules before counting on access.

For a trip further north, the guide to Fort-Mahon-Plage and Quend helps prepare a beach, dunes and Baie d’Authie day with the rules to check locally.

The main point of caution concerns protected areas. The Marquenterre Park specifies that dogs are not allowed in the park or in the Nature Reserve, even if kept on a leash. This is important information if you are planning a nature day or a trip to Pointe de la Maye.

Place or outing

With a dog

To check

Le Crotoy

Portion allowed between the Grève Alley and the Maye parking lot according to the municipality.

Exact boundaries, signs on site, season and crowd.

Saint-Valery-sur-Somme

Walk possible on the docks and in the village if the dog remains under control.

Beach access, trails near the bay and local rules.

Cayeux-sur-Mer and Le Hourdel

Walks possible in certain areas, being careful near the shoreline.

Supervised area, boardwalk, dunes, and proximity to seals.

Marquenterre Park

Not allowed, even on a leash.

Plan another activity or arrange care if you visit the park.

Baie de Somme Railway

Animals accepted for free outside dining cars, under conditions.

Short leash, placement under the seats, types of dogs.

<img alt="Dog kept on a leash on a beach, useful for preparing a walk in the Baie de Somme."/ loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://vacancesenbaiedesomme.fr/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/chien-plage-regles-baie-de-somme.webp">
On beaches and dikes, the rule to remember remains simple: read the signs before letting the dog off-leash.

Le Crotoy: the easiest area to check

Le Crotoy is the most readable spot for a walk with a dog. The town states that dogs are allowed on the beach between the Maye parking lot and the access via rue de la Grève. A municipal notice also specifies that this section extends from allée de la Grève to the Maye parking lot.

This area still requires a bit of vigilance. The Maye sector is located near sensitive natural areas. Before letting your dog run, watch for signs, the boundaries of the authorized area, and other walkers. If recall is not reliable, keep the leash on.

To organize the day around the village, you can also read our guide on villages to visit in the Baie de Somme. It helps to choose between Le Crotoy, Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, Cayeux-sur-Mer, and the other stops around the bay.

Saint-Valery, Cayeux, and Le Hourdel: proceed with caution

In Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, walking with a dog is mainly planned around the quays, the upper town, and the streets of the center. It is often more practical than looking for direct access to the foreshore. The bay can be slippery, muddy, or difficult to navigate at low tide.

In Cayeux-sur-Mer and around Le Hourdel, check the beach rules before going down onto the sand, pebbles, or areas near the dunes. During busy periods, some areas may be subject to additional restrictions. Also bring water: between the pebbles, wind, and sun, even a short walk can tire a dog more quickly.

Le Hourdel requires special attention because of the seals. Even if your dog is calm, it must stay away from wild animals. Our article on the Pointe du Hourdel details the best practices for observing without disturbing.

Places to avoid with a dog

The Marquenterre Park does not accept dogs, even on a leash. The rule is clear and also applies to the Nature Reserve. If you wish to visit the park, you must arrange for someone to look after your dog or plan another outing for the day.

Also avoid areas where wildlife is visible up close: sandbanks occupied by seals, nesting areas, salt meadows, and paths marked as sensitive. A dog can disturb birds or alarm a seal even without direct contact.

If visiting Marquenterre Park is on the agenda without your dog, you can prepare your visit with our guide on the duration of the visit, routes, and practical advice.

Taking the tourist train with a dog

The Baie de Somme Railway accepts dogs and other pets on board free of charge, except on dining trains. The official site specifies that dogs must be kept on a short leash and remain under the seats so as not to obstruct movement on board.

Category 2 dogs must be muzzled, and Category 1 dogs are not allowed. Before booking a full day, also check the schedules, the type of train chosen, and the expected crowd.

Where to sleep and where to eat with your dog?

For accommodation, the simplest way is to filter from the start the lodgings that accept animals. Then check the conditions: extra charge, dog size, number of animals, access to common areas, fenced garden or not. The mention “pets allowed” does not necessarily guarantee that all types of stays or dogs are accepted. Our selection of campsites in Baie de Somme helps you compare several areas before checking each campsite’s pet rules.

At the restaurant, terraces are often easier than indoor rooms, especially in season. Call ahead if you have a large dog or if you are coming at a very busy time. To choose the area to stay in, our page where to sleep in Baie de Somme helps to compare villages according to the type of stay.

What to plan before leaving

A sturdy leash, even if an area occasionally allows off-leash dogs.

Bags to pick up waste, including on paths and in parking lots.

Water and a light bowl, especially in areas exposed to wind or sun.

A towel if you are getting back into the car after the beach or pebbles.

The number of a veterinarian near your place of stay, for safety.

Before a stay with a dog, several points deserve to be checked: length of walks, leash management, access to accommodations, heat, available water, and the animal’s fatigue. Nyssah also offers a more general guide for traveling well on vacation with your dog.

The TransBaie 2026 will take place on Sunday, September 6, 2026, in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme. This race crosses the bay between Saint-Valery and Le Crotoy, on a course announced to be about 17 km, with a start scheduled for 2:00 PM.

The event attracts many runners and spectators. Before leaving, check especially three points: registrations, arrival at Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, and the specific constraints of the bay.

Information checked in June 2026: The announced date is Sunday, September 6, 2026, with a start at 2:00 PM and a limit of 6,500 runners. Registration, transport, bib pickup, and parking information may change: check the official TransBaie website before leaving.

TransBaie 2026: date, start, and distance

La TransBaie 2026 is scheduled for Sunday, September 6, 2026. The start is announced at 2:00 PM from Saint-Valery-sur-Somme. The route is approximately 17 km, with a passage through the bay towards Le Crotoy, then a return to Saint-Valery.

The number of participants is limited to 6,500 runners. With several thousand runners expected, it is better to arrive early to avoid traffic and parking difficulties.

Point to check

Information announced

Practical advice

Date

Sunday, September 6, 2026

Check the latest official instructions the week before.

Start

2:00 PM at Saint-Valery-sur-Somme

Arrive early, especially if you need to pick up a race bib or park.

Distance

About 17 km

The terrain may be wet, slippery, or uneven.

Participants

Maximum 6,500 runners

Access and parking are likely to be very busy.

Registration

Official Sport-Up Platform

Before registering, check if race bibs are still available.

The announced course between Saint-Valery and Le Crotoy

The official route is announced from the departure at Saint-Valery-sur-Somme. It goes through the bay towards le Crotoy, includes a loop on the Crotoy side, then returns to Saint-Valery through the bay.

The terrain is not that of a road race. Runners may encounter sand, mud, water, heavier passages, and variable footing. Even if 17 km may seem accessible on paper, the bay requires more attention than an urban course.

For a visitor who does not run, the TransBaie is also a good opportunity to understand why crossing the bay must remain supervised. Outside an organized event, one should not improvise a crossing without a guide or without knowing the tide conditions.

Registrations, price, and supporting documents

Registrations are done through the official platform indicated on the TransBaie website. The announced fee is €38. It notably includes security, refreshments, a finisher t-shirt, and a medal, according to information provided by the organization.

To participate, the official website states that you must be of legal age on the day of the event. The required documents are a valid PPS or an accepted FFA license. Before paying or preparing your file, always check the exact conditions on the official registration page.

Bib collection: the announced schedules

The bib pick-up is scheduled over several time slots. According to official information, it can be done from Wednesday, September 2 to Friday, September 4, 2026, at the road operations center, 5 Route d’Abbeville in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

On Saturday, September 5, 2026, pick-up is announced at the TransBaie village, Avenue du Général Leclerc, opposite the marina, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. On Sunday, September 6, 2026, it is announced at the same location from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

If you have the possibility to pick up your bib before Sunday, you will have one less thing to deal with on race day. On race day, you have to manage at the same time pick-up, parking, transportation, and crowds.

Coming to Saint-Valery on race day

The nearest SNCF station indicated by the organization is Noyelles-sur-Mer. A CFBS shuttle is announced between Noyelles-sur-Mer and Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, with online reservation required. The booking link is to be confirmed on the official website.

By car, the organization announces two parking areas: a South / South-East flow of about 2,000 vehicles and a city entrance parking lot on the North flow side with 1,500 spaces. Carpooling and early arrival are recommended.

On the day of the event, follow the signage and the directions of the volunteers. Usual parking habits in Saint-Valery may not be sufficient for an event of this size.

For spectators and companions

The TransBaie attracts many people. The organiser expects 25,000 to 30,000 spectators. If you are accompanying a runner, arrive early and do not plan another timed activity immediately afterwards.

The best viewing points often depend on the arrangements made on the day, the authorized zones, traffic, and the tide. Avoid positioning yourself in an unauthorized area or going down on the foreshore without clear instructions.

If you are coming to discover Saint-Valery, also keep time for the quays, the port, and the old town. Our guide for visiting Saint-Valery-sur-Somme can help organize the rest of the day.

Safety, tide, and environment

The TransBaie takes place in a sensitive natural area. The official site reminds that the bay is classified as a Natura 2000 zone and that the route is strictly regulated to limit the impact on wildlife and plants.

For runners, this means staying on the marked course and following the organizers’ instructions. For spectators, this means not trying to cut across the bay, not leaving authorized areas, and not approaching sensitive sectors.

The tide is part of the event’s constraints, but it is better not to rely solely on an estimate read several weeks in advance. For any outing around the bay, check the official times and local instructions.

Sleeping around Saint-Valery or Le Crotoy

If you are coming from far away, plan your accommodation in advance. The area of Saint-Valery, Le Crotoy, Noyelles-sur-Mer, and Rue can be more in demand around an event like the TransBaie.

To choose the right area, our page where to sleep in the Baie de Somme provides the basic guidelines: stay near Saint-Valery to limit travel, consider Le Crotoy if you want to be on the north side, or expand towards Rue and Noyelles if you don’t mind driving a little.

To check before leaving

Renting a campervan to visit Baie de Somme: benefits, limits, budget, parking and checks before booking.

Renting a motorhome to visit the Baie de Somme can be a good solution if you want to change areas without repacking your bags. But it is not always the easiest choice: parking, narrow streets, and busy periods must be anticipated.

Before booking, the most important thing is to know what you expect from your stay. For two or three nights, a van or a compact camper may be sufficient. For a family, a more equipped motorhome provides comfort, but it requires more attention regarding access, height, maneuvers, and available spots.

Information checked in June 2026: Rates, access, and parking rules can change. Before renting a vehicle, check the official pages of the municipalities and areas where you plan to sleep or park.

Renting a motorhome: in which cases is it relevant?

A motorhome is interesting if you want to explore several areas of the bay during the same trip: Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, Le Crotoy, Cayeux-sur-Mer, Le Hourdel, or the Marquenterre Park. It also allows you to sleep close to your next day’s stop, provided you choose an authorized area.

It is less suitable if you mainly want to enjoy a city center, go out at night without worrying about getting back, or park as close as possible to each visit. In this case, a room, a cottage, or a fixed campsite may be simpler, with travel by car, on foot, by bike, or on a tourist train depending on the program.

Good idea For a mobile stay between several villages, with nights planned at designated areas.

Useful compromise Rent a compact vehicle, then plan few stages and short trips.

Which vehicle to choose for the Baie de Somme?

The choice primarily depends on the size of the vehicle. Large motorhomes are comfortable for sleeping, cooking, and traveling with children, but they are less practical in old streets, busy parking lots, and small accesses near the bay.

A van or a converted van is often easier to manage for a first stay. It drives more simply, parks more easily, and helps to limit constraints in villages. However, the interior space is smaller, especially in bad weather or with several passengers.

Motorhome rental

Compare vans and motorhomes available with Yescapa

Useful if you want to rent a vehicle before planning your itinerary in the Baie de Somme.

This recommendation may allow us to earn a commission, at no extra cost to you.

Where to sleep and park with a rented vehicle?

In Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, the motorhome area is located on rue de la Croix l’Abbé. The municipality indicates year-round opening, a capacity of about 200 vehicles, as well as access to frost-free water and electricity included in the parking fee. It is the most convenient point if you want to visit Saint-Valery without driving into the old town with your vehicle.

In Le Crotoy, the municipality has two dedicated areas: the sector along Chemin du Marais / shellfish farming station and the sector at the hunting basin / marina. Rates are indicated in 24-hour increments. Payment and access may require following a specific procedure, particularly with license plate recognition.

In Cayeux-sur-Mer and Le Hourdel, the rules should also be checked before arriving. The municipality reminds that overnight parking of campervans outside designated areas is not allowed. Several suitable areas exist around Cayeux, La Mollière, and Brighton-les-Pins.

<img alt="Motorhomes parked near the port of Le Crotoy in the Baie de Somme"/ loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://vacancesenbaiedesomme.fr/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/aire-camping-car-port-crotoy-baie-de-somme.webp">

Parking area near the port of Le Crotoy. Photo: Raimond Spekking, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons.

A simple itinerary for a first stay

For a first experience, avoid multiplying the stages. Two or three nights are enough to understand if this mode of travel suits you. The goal is not to want to see everything, but to choose points that are easy to link.

Day 1:arrival in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, parking in the dedicated area, walk along the quays and in the upper town.

Day 2: Le Hourdel or Cayeux-sur-Mer depending on the tide, with checking of the parking and schedules before leaving.

Day 3: Le Crotoy or the Marquenterre Park, then return without planning a last stage that is too long.

If you only have a weekend, keep a main base and radiate around it. The guide motorhome in the Baie de Somme details the parking spots to check before arriving.

Checks before booking

Before booking, take the time to check a few practical points. Look at the vehicle, but also the practical conditions around the stay: pickup, inventory, insurance, options, equipment, security deposit, mileage, and return times.

height, length, and width of the vehicle;

actual number of beds and number of registered seats;

heating, hot water, refrigerator, and electrical autonomy;

presence of chocks, extension cord, water hose, and adapters;

conditions for traveling with a dog, if needed;

included mileage and cost of additional kilometers;

vehicle pick-up location;

cancellation conditions and security deposit.

Budget: what to consider in addition to the rental

The rental price is not enough to estimate the cost of the stay. Add fuel, tolls if you are coming from afar, parking, service areas, possible campgrounds, rental options, and meals. On a short stay, these expenses are sometimes underestimated.

To limit expenses, prepare a short itinerary and avoid unnecessary round trips. The Baie de Somme is often more pleasantly discovered with a few well-chosen stops than with a long loop that requires moving the vehicle several times a day.

Motorhome, vacation rental, or bed and breakfast: which to choose?

The motorhome is suitable if you like to move around and if you are willing to prepare the parking spots. A vacation rental is more comfortable for staying several days in the same place, especially with children. A bed and breakfast can be simpler for a short stay, with less logistics and sometimes useful advice on site.

Before choosing your accommodation, think about the type of stay you are looking for: mobile stay, quiet stay, weekend for two, family vacation, or nature stopover. The page where to sleep in the Baie de Somme helps to compare areas according to your way of traveling.

Not necessarily. A large vehicle brings comfort, but it sometimes complicates access. For a first rental, look at the number of beds, the interior space, and the size before choosing.

What to do in Abbeville, Baie de Somme: Saint-Vulfran, the belfry, Parc de la Bouvaque, market, train access and half-day visit ideas.

Abbeville is the main town in the Baie de Somme area. It is not a seaside resort, but it is useful during a stay: heritage sites, a covered market, a town park, shops, a railway station and easy access by road.

If you are staying around Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, Le Crotoy, Cayeux-sur-Mer or inland, Abbeville can be a practical base, an arrival point or a good alternative when the weather makes coastal outings less appealing. Half a day is enough for a first visit.

If you come by car, also check the options for free parking in Abbeville before choosing where to start.

Information checked in June 2026: opening times for monuments, the museum, the Carmel, the park and the market can change with the season or local events. Check official pages before planning your day around a specific visit.

Why include Abbeville in a Baie de Somme trip?

Abbeville adds something different to a Baie de Somme stay: a railway station, more shops, a proper town centre, a useful market and several heritage sites within a fairly short walking distance.

It is also one of the easier entry points if you arrive without a car. From Abbeville, you can cycle towards Saint-Valery-sur-Somme on the Somme Valley cycle route, then organise your onward journey towards the villages around the bay.

If you need

In Abbeville

Check before you go

Heritage

Saint-Vulfran, the belfry, Saint-Sepulcre, the Carmel

Opening times and guided tour options.

A short nature break

Parc de la Bouvaque, Jardin d’Emonville

Simple walking shoes, especially after rain.

Food shopping

Municipal market, Halle Jean-Pierre Pernaut

Thursday and Saturday mornings according to the town.

Arrival without a car

Abbeville railway station, cycle route towards Saint-Valery

Your final connection to your accommodation.

What to see in Abbeville in half a day

For a first visit, start with the collegiate church of Saint-Vulfran. Its flamboyant Gothic facade is the main landmark in the town centre. The tourist office states that construction began in 1488 and that the two towers are more than 55 metres high. Even if you do not visit the whole interior, it is worth stopping outside.

Continue towards the belfry and the Boucher-de-Perthes – Manessier museum. The belfry dates from the 13th century and is part of the Belfries of Belgium and France listed by UNESCO. If you do not have time for the museum, the area still helps you understand the older centre.

If the church is open when you pass, add Saint-Sepulcre. It is known for its stained-glass windows by Alfred Manessier. This is a quiet visit, especially if you enjoy the contrast between older architecture and modern stained glass.

To finish without making the day too long, choose between the Carmel – Maison du Patrimoine, the Jardin d’Emonville or a pause at Parc de la Bouvaque. In two or three hours, it is better to choose fewer stops and leave time to look at the streets, facades and the edges of the Somme.

Short version Saint-Vulfran, the belfry, a coffee or a quick pause in the centre.

Heritage route Saint-Vulfran, the belfry, Saint-Sepulcre and the Carmel if opening times allow.

With children Town centre, market if it is the right day, then Parc de la Bouvaque.

<img alt="Parc de la Bouvaque in Abbeville, a nature break in Baie de Somme"/ loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://vacancesenbaiedesomme.fr/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/parc-bouvaque-abbeville-baie-de-somme-en.webp">
Parc de la Bouvaque adds a simple nature break to a more urban visit.

Saint-Vulfran: the main landmark

Saint-Vulfran is the main landmark in the town centre. The flamboyant Gothic facade immediately stands out when you arrive. The tourist office describes it as a major example of Picardy flamboyant Gothic architecture, with a wooden nave and old altarpieces in the side chapels.

The simplest approach is to start on the square, then check whether the church is open. If you have little time, focus on the facade, the sculptures and the towers, then step inside for a few minutes if access is possible.

Belfry, museum and Saint-Sepulcre: the heritage centre

The belfry is a good second stop. It recalls Abbeville’s role in the Middle Ages and its importance in Ponthieu. The town states that it is now part of the Beffroi Musee Boucher de Perthes – Manessier.

The name Boucher de Perthes is linked to prehistory. The tourist office mentions that Abbeville has the oldest prehistoric site in northern France, discovered by Jacques Boucher de Perthes in 1863. If the museum is open and you enjoy local history, it is worth considering.

Saint-Sepulcre completes this heritage route. According to the town, Manessier’s stained-glass windows cover more than 300 square metres. Keep it for a quieter stop in the centre before heading towards the park.

Parc de la Bouvaque: a nature break in town

Parc de la Bouvaque is another good reason to include Abbeville. Hauts-de-France Tourisme describes it as a wetland of about 60 hectares, with waterside paths, resident and migratory birds, and blue springs. It is useful if you want a quiet walk without driving back towards the coast.

The park works well after the town centre or the market. You can walk there simply, look at the ponds, take a break with children or check whether a nature outing is scheduled. For a broader nature-focused day, our guide to nature in Baie de Somme gives other ideas around the bay.

Market, food shopping and lunch break

Abbeville is also useful for food shopping during your stay. The town lists a food market on Thursday and Saturday mornings under the Halle Jean-Pierre Pernaut, place Jacques Becq. On Thursdays, an open-air market completes the offer around the square.

If you arrive at the beginning of your stay, the Saturday market can be more useful than a small seaside market. To compare market days by village and area, read our guide to markets in Baie de Somme.

Abbeville without a car, by train or by bike

Abbeville is one of the easier arrival points if you come by train. The main question is not reaching Abbeville, but organising the final journey to your accommodation if you are staying on the coast. Depending on your plans, it may be easier to stay near Abbeville, rent a car, use a bike or book a transfer in advance.

By bike, the Abbeville – Saint-Valery-sur-Somme stage on the Somme Valley cycle route is an interesting option. France Velo Tourisme lists it at about 16 km. It is short on paper, but you still need to plan the return, the weather and any luggage.

To choose where to stay according to the way you travel, the page where to stay in Baie de Somme helps compare coastal villages, quieter areas and more practical inland bases.

FAQ: visiting Abbeville in Baie de Somme

Cycling in Baie de Somme: easy routes, La Vélomaritime, Saint-Valery, Le Crotoy, Cayeux, e-bikes, wind, tides and practical planning tips.

Baie de Somme works well by bike: the landscape is mostly flat, distances are reasonable and several sections are designed for cycling. The main point is to choose the right route, take the wind seriously and plan the return before you start.

For a first ride, keep it simple: Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, Le Crotoy, Cayeux-sur-Mer, Le Hourdel or Noyelles-sur-Mer. These areas work for a short ride, a half-day outing or a more complete loop around the bay.

Checked in May 2026: cycling routes, rental services, train conditions and access rules can change. Also check the state of coastal sections after strong wind, high tides or works, especially around the Route Blanche.

Where should you cycle in Baie de Somme?

For a first ride, the easiest choice is to follow already signposted routes: La Vélomaritime between Cayeux-sur-Mer and Le Crotoy, the Somme Valley cycle route from Abbeville, or the circuits suggested by BaieCyclette. These routes make planning easier and reduce the need to improvise on the day.

The coast is not difficult in terms of hills, but weather and wind can change the effort. A route that feels easy in the morning may be more tiring on the way back if the wind is against you.

Type of ride

Route to consider

What to plan

First outing

Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, Noyelles-sur-Mer, Le Crotoy

Wind, return route, busier sections in season

Coastal section

Cayeux-sur-Mer, Le Hourdel, Saint-Valery-sur-Somme

Stops, weather, timing if you combine it with a visit

Arrival from inland

Abbeville to Saint-Valery-sur-Somme via the Somme Valley cycle route

Short distance, but check the return or train option

Custom route

Point-to-point network and BaieCyclette circuits

Note the points or save the route on your phone before leaving

<img alt="Two cyclists on a path beside Baie de Somme"/ loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://vacancesenbaiedesomme.fr/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/cyclists-baie-de-somme-coastal-path.webp">
For a coastal ride, check the return, the wind and the state of the route before leaving.

La Vélomaritime: Cayeux, Le Hourdel, Saint-Valery and Le Crotoy

La Vélomaritime, also known as EuroVelo 4, crosses Baie de Somme. The official stage between Cayeux-sur-Mer and Le Crotoy is listed at 29 km. It goes through the Route Blanche, Le Hourdel, Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, Noyelles-sur-Mer and Le Crotoy.

This is the most useful route for visitors who want to connect several well-known places without building the itinerary from scratch. France Vélo Tourisme rates the stage as beginner-friendly, with a very high share of cycle path. Even so, slow down around Saint-Valery and tourist areas, especially when pedestrians are numerous.

The Route Blanche section is attractive, but it is also exposed to coastal conditions. After storms, high tides or works, check current information before planning the ride around this part of the coast.

If you pass through Le Hourdel, keep time for a short stop on foot. For seal watching, tide time matters more than the time you leave by bike. Our guide to Pointe du Hourdel explains the main rules to follow on site.

Cycling between Saint-Valery-sur-Somme and Le Crotoy

Saint-Valery-sur-Somme and Le Crotoy are often visited on the same day. By bike, you have to go around the bay, so the distance is longer than it looks on a map. It is a good ride, but it should be treated as a real outing, not just a short transfer between two villages.

For an easier day, you can ride one section and use the Baie de Somme railway for the return, depending on timetables and current conditions. Official sources indicate that bikes can be carried on some services, but check the details before relying on it.

If your priority is to visit the villages, start with our guide to Saint-Valery-sur-Somme. It helps you organise the visit without adding too much walking after the bike ride.

Abbeville to Saint-Valery by bike

The Somme Valley cycle route links inland areas with Saint-Valery-sur-Somme. The Abbeville to Saint-Valery stage is short compared with long-distance routes: France Vélo Tourisme gives it at around 16 km. It can work well if you want a quieter approach along the canal before reaching the bay.

The advantage is practical: Abbeville has a train station, services and a more urban base. If you have time before or after the ride, our guide covers the main places to visit in Abbeville. For the bike trip, you still need to organise what happens at the end of the ride: return route, train, rental drop-off or accommodation.

Standard bike or e-bike?

On paper, Baie de Somme does not require an e-bike. The terrain is mostly flat and several sections are prepared for cycling. A standard hybrid bike is enough for a short outing with little luggage and favourable weather.

An e-bike becomes more comfortable if you ride with children, a trailer, panniers or if you want to combine Cayeux, Saint-Valery and Le Crotoy in the same day. It also helps with headwind. Before leaving, check the real battery range, the battery level at departure and possible charging options if you are planning a long day.

If you rent locally, several providers offer hybrid bikes, e-bikes, mountain bikes, children’s bikes and accessories. The pages Vélo en Baie de Somme, Location Vélos Baie de Somme and Accueil Vélo help identify rental services. Prices and availability change with the season; booking ahead is safer for busy weekends.

What to check before leaving

Wind direction: a headwind on the way out often makes the return easier.

Tide times: useful if you plan to stop at Le Hourdel or near the foreshore.

Route condition: especially on coastal sections after bad weather or works.

Bike type: hybrid bike for cycle paths, e-bike if you ride longer or with luggage.

Return plan: same route, train, loop or pickup point.

Breaks: water, toilets and somewhere to lock bikes, especially with children.

The bay looks easy because it is open and flat. The main difficulties are more practical: wind, changing weather, busy paths in summer and the temptation to add too many stops.

FAQ: cycling in Baie de Somme

Can you cycle around Baie de Somme?

Yes, but plan it as a proper outing. France Vélo Tourisme presents cycling around Baie de Somme as a route of about 60 km depending on the starting point. For a first time, many visitors prefer to choose one section and organise the return.

Which route is easiest for beginners?

The prepared sections of La Vélomaritime and the Somme Valley cycle route are the easiest routes to start with. The right choice depends on your starting point and how you plan to return.

Should you book a bike in advance?

On weekdays outside peak season, it is not always necessary. On weekends, during holidays or if you want an e-bike, trailer or child bike, booking ahead is recommended.

Where to park a campervan in Baie de Somme: Saint-Valery-sur-Somme aire, services, prices, town parking and checks before arriving.

Coming to Baie de Somme by campervan takes a little planning, especially around Saint-Valery-sur-Somme. The bay is popular, and the older streets are not always easy with a large vehicle. It is better to know where to park before arriving.

If you do not own a vehicle, our guide to renting a campervan in Baie de Somme explains what to check before booking.

Before you leave, check what kind of place you are heading for. Some aires allow overnight stays with water or electricity. Other car parks are only useful for temporary parking and do not provide services. For several nights with toilets and electricity, you can choose a campsite rather than an aire. If you are visiting without a campervan, check our notes on car parking.

Information checked in May 2026: prices, services and rules can change. Before travelling, check the official town or tourist office page, especially in high season, at weekends and during events.

Saint-Valery-sur-Somme campervan aire: what to know

The Saint-Valery-sur-Somme campervan aire is located rue de la Croix l’Abbe, on the upper side of town. The town states that it is open all year and has capacity for around 200 vehicles. Water, outside frost periods, and electricity are included in the parking price.

Its main advantage is location. You remain close to Saint-Valery without driving into the most sensitive streets of the old centre. The tourist office indicates that the town centre and harbour can be reached on foot through the small streets of Saint-Valery.

Entry to the campervan aire is automatic, and payment is made when leaving. In case of difficulty, the town refers visitors to the municipal police.

Point to check

Saint-Valery-sur-Somme

Why it matters

Address

Rue de la Croix l’Abbe

Enter it directly in your GPS to avoid the old centre.

Opening

All year according to the town and tourist office

Check before leaving in case of works or temporary restriction.

Capacity

Around 200 vehicles according to the town

Good capacity, but visitor numbers can rise quickly in season.

Services

Water outside frost periods, electricity, paid parking

Useful to decide whether you are visiting only or staying overnight.

Payment

On exit, automatic entry

Allow for card payment and a little time during busy periods.

Prices: read the official table carefully

The town indicates a first free 15-minute period, valid once per day, then progressive pricing up to 12 euros for 8 hours and more, within a 24-hour limit. These amounts were shown on the official page checked in May 2026.

For a very short stop, the free 15 minutes may be enough to check information or leave if the aire does not suit you. For a real visit to Saint-Valery, think in terms of a day or overnight stay.

Do not confuse these prices with standard town parking. Saint-Valery also applies paid parking in urban spaces, with different rules, times and amounts. For a campervan, the dedicated aire is usually the clearest starting point.

Parking in town: what changes with a campervan

Saint-Valery is very pleasant on foot, but less simple with a large vehicle. The old centre, sloping streets, busy quays and crowded days can quickly make arrival more difficult.

The town states that paid parking applies in town every day of the year from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. It also mentions the canal car park as a free parking area with no time limit, open every day and 24 hours a day at the entrance to town.

For a campervan, check the exact access, height and usage conditions on site. A free car park is not automatically a service aire. In high season, the free La Sauterelle shuttle can also help you move around Saint-Valery without using the campervan again.

<img alt="Campervan pitches near Baie de Somme"/ loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://vacancesenbaiedesomme.fr/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/aire-camping-car-baie-de-somme-emplacements.webp">
Before settling in, check whether the place is a service aire, a paid parking area or a simple temporary car park.

Other aires around Baie de Somme

If Saint-Valery is full, or if your route works better from another side of the bay, the tourist office also lists options around the area, including Cayeux-sur-Mer, Eaucourt-sur-Somme, Mareuil-Caubert and Lancheres.

Services are not identical everywhere. Check whether you need water, electricity, waste disposal, overnight parking, or simply a place to stop for a few hours. The right choice depends on your plan for the day.

Checklist before arriving

check whether overnight parking is allowed;

check water, electricity and waste disposal services;

look at payment methods and maximum duration;

avoid entering the old centre without a clear route;

arrive earlier in high season and on weekends;

keep a backup option if your first choice is full.

Which area should you choose?

Saint-Valery The most practical choice if you want to visit the town, walk along the quays and avoid driving into the centre.

Cayeux and Le Hourdel Useful if your plan is the coast, the Route Blanche or seal watching from the observation area.

North of the bay More suitable if you plan to visit Le Crotoy, Rue or Parc du Marquenterre.

If your main aim is to visit Saint-Valery, the dedicated aire on rue de la Croix l’Abbe is the most straightforward option. If you want a wider nature route, look at Cayeux, Le Hourdel or the north side depending on your day plan.

For a wider stay, this article pairs well with our guides to where to stay in Baie de Somme, villages to visit and planning a weekend.

Common mistakes to avoid

The first mistake is trying to reach the old centre before deciding where to park. With a car, it can work. With a campervan, it can quickly become tiring, especially when traffic is heavy. Aim for the aire or a suitable car park from the start.

The second is confusing parking with services. A car park may accept your vehicle without offering water, electricity or waste disposal. A service aire may be right for a night, but less useful if you only need a twenty-minute stop.

The third is looking only at price. Walking distance, access, manoeuvring space and night-time calm also matter when choosing where to stop.

FAQ: campervan in Baie de Somme

Where is the Saint-Valery-sur-Somme campervan aire?

It is located rue de la Croix l’Abbe, on the upper side of town. According to the tourist office, the centre and harbour can be reached on foot.

Can you stay overnight at the Saint-Valery aire?

The aire is designed for campervans, open all year according to official sources, with prices up to 24 hours. Always check the conditions displayed on site before settling in for the night.

Are water and electricity available?

The town indicates that water, outside frost periods, and electricity are included in the parking price at the Saint-Valery campervan aire.

Can you park a campervan for free in Saint-Valery?

The town mentions the canal car park as free and open 24 hours a day, but this does not automatically replace a campervan service aire. For overnight stays or waste disposal, check the rules and use suitable places.

Do you need to book an aire in Baie de Somme?

It depends on the aire, the season and the operator. In high season, at weekends and on busy days, check conditions before arriving. For campsites and some private options, booking may be recommended.

Which aire should you choose to visit Saint-Valery?

For visiting Saint-Valery, the municipal aire on rue de la Croix l’Abbe is the most obvious choice because it avoids looking for a place in the centre and remains within walking distance of the harbour and town.

How long to spend at Parc du Marquenterre, which route to choose, ticket prices, binoculars, children and practical tips before visiting.

Our main page about Parc du Marquenterre covers the essential points: when to go, what to bring and how to fit the visit into a stay. This article focuses on a more practical question: how much time to allow, which route to choose and how to avoid planning the visit too tightly.

The park is visited on foot, with a 6 km main route, shorter options and 13 observation posts. On the route, you may stop for a bird hide, a guide’s explanation or a species seen in the reeds. It is better to keep enough time available.

Prices checked in May 2026: the self-guided visit is paid. The official site lists 12 euros for adults, 8.60 euros for children aged 6 to 17, free entry for children under 6, a family ticket at 35.10 euros and binocular rental at 5 euros. Check the official ticket office before visiting.

How much time should you allow at Parc du Marquenterre?

For a first visit, half a day is the most comfortable format. It leaves time to buy tickets, pick up the map, walk at a reasonable pace, stop at several hides and speak with naturalist guides when they are present.

A shorter visit is possible, but the interest drops quickly if you rush. This is not a viewpoint where you arrive, look and leave. The visit builds gradually from one observation point to the next.

Time available

Suggested format

Best for

1 to 1.5 hours

Short route, using a shortcut and without trying to see everything.

Quick visit, uncertain weather, very young children.

2 to 2.5 hours

Good compromise: several hides, regular stops and a flexible pace.

First visit, families, already busy stay.

Half a day

Long route or slower visit, with real observation breaks.

Nature lovers, photographers, visitors who want time.

Full day

Park, break on site, second look at some hides or guided outing.

Birdwatchers, repeat visitors, nature-focused stay.

Understanding the routes

The Parc du Marquenterre is organised around a 6 km walking route. Shorter 2 km and 4 km loops are possible thanks to shortcuts. A detailed map is given at the entrance, so you do not need to memorise the route before starting.

Distance is not the only point to consider. Think about how many hides you want to use, how long your group can stand and watch, and whether the weather is windy, hot or wet.

2 km For a short discovery, or when weather conditions are not ideal.

4 km The balanced option: enough variety without turning the visit into a long hike.

6 km The full route, useful if you have time and want to observe quietly.

For a first visit, the 4 km route is often the most reasonable choice. It gives a good sense of the site without requiring too much stamina. The 6 km route is more suitable if you enjoy walking slowly and stopping often.

What pace works best?

At Parc du Marquenterre, a slower pace is usually better. In a bird reserve, walking fast mostly helps you miss more things. Choose a few hides where you really take time to observe instead of trying to rush through all 13 observation posts.

At each hide, take a minute to look without equipment. Then use binoculars or a camera. Birds are not always in the middle of the view. Some are low on the water, some are in the reeds, and some fly through before everyone has found them.

The naturalist guides are one of the park’s strong points. If someone is present in a hide, use the opportunity. A short explanation can help you spot a species, understand behaviour or identify where to look.

With children: choose a realistic format

With children, the best route is not always the longest one. A shorter loop with proper stops is usually better than a full route that becomes tiring before the end. Bring water, snacks and a simple plan.

Binoculars can help children stay interested, but they also need time to learn how to use them. If they are young, plan short observation moments and accept that some hides will be skipped.

<img alt="Greylag geese observed at Parc du Marquenterre"/ loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://vacancesenbaiedesomme.fr/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/oies-cendrees-parc-du-marquenterre.webp">
Birdwatching is easier with binoculars and enough time at the hides.

Accessibility, pushchairs and fatigue

The official site indicates compacted sand paths. A pushchair is possible, but some slopes and sandier sections may require effort. With a small child, a short or medium route is often easier.

The park is exposed in places. Wind, heat or rain can make the visit more tiring than the distance suggests. Comfortable shoes and a windproof layer are useful even on a mild day.

What to prepare before entering the route

check opening times and ticket conditions;

decide whether to rent binoculars if you do not have any;

bring water and a windproof layer;

choose a route before starting, but keep the option to shorten it;

avoid planning another timed activity immediately afterwards.

Self-guided visit or guided outing?

A self-guided visit is enough for most first-time visitors. The route is clear, the map is useful, and guides may be present at some hides. This format works well if you want flexibility.

A guided outing is more useful if you want to understand the reserve, bird migration, nesting areas or the different habitats. Workshops and guided visits depend on the programme, so check dates and booking conditions in advance.

Common mistakes to avoid

The first mistake is planning the park between two tight appointments. You may technically have enough time to enter, but not enough to enjoy the visit.

The second is choosing the 6 km route just because it is the full route. If the group is tired, if the weather is difficult or if you are visiting with young children, a shorter loop is often better.

The third is forgetting that birdwatching involves waiting. Some hides will be quiet. Others may become interesting after a few minutes. Give yourself enough time to adapt.

How to fit it into a day in Baie de Somme

Parc du Marquenterre works best as the main part of a half-day. Before or after the visit, keep the rest simple: Le Crotoy, Rue, a coffee break, a short walk or a quiet return to your accommodation.

For a wider day plan, read our guide to things to do in Baie de Somme. If this is part of a nature stay, pair it with our article on nature in Baie de Somme. For a first two-day stay, the weekend guide helps spread outings without overloading the programme.

FAQ: visit length, trails and planning

How long does it take to visit Parc du Marquenterre?

Allow at least 2 to 2.5 hours for a first visit. Half a day is more comfortable if you want to observe properly, stop at several hides and follow a fuller route.

Which route should you choose?

The main route is 6 km, with shorter 2 km and 4 km loops possible. For a first visit, the 4 km route is often the best compromise. Choose 6 km if you have time and want to observe slowly.

Can you visit with a pushchair?

Yes, the paths are arranged in compacted sand, but some slopes and sandier sections may require effort. With a young child, a short or medium route is usually more comfortable.

Are dogs allowed at Parc du Marquenterre?

No. The official site states that dogs are not allowed in the park or nature reserve, even on a lead.

Do you need to book?

For a self-guided visit, check current conditions on the official site before leaving. Guided visits, workshops and special outings are booked according to the programme.

Is Parc du Marquenterre free?

No. The self-guided visit is paid. Prices checked in May 2026 were 12 euros for adults and 8.60 euros for children aged 6 to 17, with free entry for children under 6. Check the official ticket office for current prices.

Are binoculars essential?

They are not mandatory, but they make observation much more precise. If you do not have any, the park offers binocular rental according to its practical information.
