Where to find free parking in Baie de Somme: Saint-Valery, Le Crotoy, Cayeux, Le Hourdel, Abbeville and arrival tips.

Finding free parking in the Baie de Somme is possible, but not everywhere, not all year round, and rarely close to the quay or the beach. The most useful thing is therefore to know where to park before arriving, and when to accept paying for a better-located parking spot.

Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, Le Crotoy, Cayeux-sur-Mer, Le Hourdel, and Abbeville do not have the same parking rules. Some areas offer free parking within a reasonable distance, while others mainly operate with paid parking in season or with a blue zone. For a trip towards the northern coast, also check parking in Fort-Mahon-Plage, especially in season.

Information checked in June 2026: Parking rules may change depending on the municipality, the season, events, and construction. Before a visit in the height of summer, on a weekend, or on market day, always check the official municipal page.

The practical summary

Location

Option to consider

To know

Maps

Saint-Valery-sur-Somme

Canal parking

Free, no time limit, 24/7.

Saint-Valery-sur-Somme: aim for the canal parking lot

In Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, the simplest free parking to remember is the canal parking lot. The municipality indicates that it is free, without time limit, accessible 7 days a week and 24 hours a day, at the entrance of the town on the Abbeville road side.

It’s the right choice if you are coming for a half-day, a market, a walk on the quays, or a visit without time constraints. In return, you have to accept being at the city entrance. Count on about 15 to 25 minutes on foot depending on the point you are aiming for, or use the free shuttle La Sauterelle when it is running.

The center of Saint-Valery is paid every day of the year during the hours indicated by the municipality. For a very short stop, the first 45 minutes are free once a day. For a proper visit, the canal parking generally remains simpler.

At what time to arrive In summer, during long weekends or a market Sunday, aiming to arrive before 10 a.m. is still more comfortable. After 11 a.m., you can still park, but walking or taking the shuttle often becomes the better option.

If you come in a converted vehicle, rather read the guide dedicated to motorhomes in the Baie de Somme. The rules are not the same between parking for a few hours and staying overnight on site.

Le Crotoy: little free parking, but a city entrance parking lot is useful

In Le Crotoy, paid parking applies from April 1 to October 31 throughout the town, according to the zones indicated by the city. The parking lots closest to the beach and the casino are also the most expensive, and they remain in high demand on sunny days.

To limit the budget, the city entrance parking, via the Rue road, is often more reasonable: the municipality announces 3 euros for 13 hours of parking between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. It is not free, but it avoids driving around the streets near the dike.

For a short visit, the central area remains convenient if you accept the rate. For a day at the beach, market, or walk, it’s better to aim for the city entrance and walk a bit. Depending on your pace, allow about 10 to 20 minutes to reach the most frequented areas.

Cayeux-sur-Mer: free inland, paid on the waterfront

In Cayeux-sur-Mer, the waterfront is paid from April 1 to September 30. The tourist office specifies that parking remains free in other streets, except for the areas listed around Boulevard du Général Sizaire, certain nearby streets, and Place du Général de Gaulle.

In practice, if you want to avoid paid parking, you need to look further away from the sea and be willing to walk a few minutes. For a family with young children, beach equipment, or uncertain weather, paying near the waterfront can still be simpler.

For a walk on the boardwalk or a quick stop, start by looking at the area center / streets further back. On sunny summer days, it’s better to arrive before late morning.

Le Hourdel: come early when the tide draws people

Le Hourdel works differently. The municipality of Cayeux indicates that parking is paid in the hamlet all year round. It’s a very targeted area: many visitors come for the dike, the White Road, or seal watching.

The arrival time mainly depends on the tide. When conditions are favorable for seal observation, the crowd increases faster. If you want to find a spot more easily, arrive before the start of the observation window, not when everyone is already looking for a place.

Before leaving, also consult our guide on the Pointe du Hourdel. It explains where to observe the seals from a distance and why tide times matter as much as parking.

Abbeville: free blue zone, but disc required

In Abbeville, parking indicated by the tourist office is free in the blue zone, with a disc required, from Monday to Saturday during the announced hours, excluding Sundays and public holidays. There are two durations: 1 hour or 2 hours depending on the zone.

It is convenient for a short visit to the center, a coffee, a market, or a stop around Saint-Vulfran. For a full half-day, check the maximum duration of the zone where you park. Free does not necessarily mean unlimited.

If you are willing to walk a little, also look at the Vauban Boulevard and the streets set back around the center. Depending on the available location, this allows you to avoid limitations related to the blue zone while remaining reasonable on foot to reach the town center.

Which parking to choose depending on your visit?

Visiting Saint-Valery Canal parking if you have time to walk. Paid center parking only for a short stop or mobility constraint.

Going to Le Crotoy City entrance parking to limit the cost. Beach/casino area if you want to be as close as possible.

Seeing the seals At Hourdel, it is better to adjust your arrival time to the tide schedule. Arriving early is often more important than the choice of parking.

For market days, allow extra time. The markets in Saint-Valery and Le Crotoy can affect traffic and the availability of spaces. The guide of markets in the Baie de Somme helps to choose the right day before leaving.

Renting a campervan to visit Baie de Somme: benefits, limits, budget, parking and checks before booking.

Renting a motorhome to visit the Baie de Somme can be a good solution if you want to change areas without repacking your bags. But it is not always the easiest choice: parking, narrow streets, and busy periods must be anticipated.

Before booking, the most important thing is to know what you expect from your stay. For two or three nights, a van or a compact camper may be sufficient. For a family, a more equipped motorhome provides comfort, but it requires more attention regarding access, height, maneuvers, and available spots.

Information checked in June 2026: Rates, access, and parking rules can change. Before renting a vehicle, check the official pages of the municipalities and areas where you plan to sleep or park.

Renting a motorhome: in which cases is it relevant?

A motorhome is interesting if you want to explore several areas of the bay during the same trip: Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, Le Crotoy, Cayeux-sur-Mer, Le Hourdel, or the Marquenterre Park. It also allows you to sleep close to your next day’s stop, provided you choose an authorized area.

It is less suitable if you mainly want to enjoy a city center, go out at night without worrying about getting back, or park as close as possible to each visit. In this case, a room, a cottage, or a fixed campsite may be simpler, with travel by car, on foot, by bike, or on a tourist train depending on the program.

Good idea For a mobile stay between several villages, with nights planned at designated areas.

To avoid If you want to improvise parking at the last minute in high season or during a long weekend.

Useful compromise Rent a compact vehicle, then plan few stages and short trips.

Which vehicle to choose for the Baie de Somme?

The choice primarily depends on the size of the vehicle. Large motorhomes are comfortable for sleeping, cooking, and traveling with children, but they are less practical in old streets, busy parking lots, and small accesses near the bay.

A van or a converted van is often easier to manage for a first stay. It drives more simply, parks more easily, and helps to limit constraints in villages. However, the interior space is smaller, especially in bad weather or with several passengers.

Type of vehicle

Main interest

Converted van

More discreet, simpler for driving around.

Autonomy, sleeping, storage, and comfort in wet weather.

Converted van

Good compromise between comfort and reasonable size.

Height, length, shower, heating, and night equipment.

Profiled motorhome

More comfortable for several days or for a family.

Access to areas, maneuvers, parking, and fuel consumption.

Alcove motorhome

Practical beds with children.

Considerable height and wind resistance.

Motorhome rental

Compare vans and motorhomes available with Yescapa

Useful if you want to rent a vehicle before planning your itinerary in the Baie de Somme.

This recommendation may allow us to earn a commission, at no extra cost to you.

Where to sleep and park with a rented vehicle?

In Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, the motorhome area is located on rue de la Croix l’Abbé. The municipality indicates year-round opening, a capacity of about 200 vehicles, as well as access to frost-free water and electricity included in the parking fee. It is the most convenient point if you want to visit Saint-Valery without driving into the old town with your vehicle.

In Le Crotoy, the municipality has two dedicated areas: the sector along Chemin du Marais / shellfish farming station and the sector at the hunting basin / marina. Rates are indicated in 24-hour increments. Payment and access may require following a specific procedure, particularly with license plate recognition.

In Cayeux-sur-Mer and Le Hourdel, the rules should also be checked before arriving. The municipality reminds that overnight parking of campervans outside designated areas is not allowed. Several suitable areas exist around Cayeux, La Mollière, and Brighton-les-Pins.

<img alt="Motorhomes parked near the port of Le Crotoy in the Baie de Somme"/ loading="eager" fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" src="https://vacancesenbaiedesomme.fr/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/aire-camping-car-port-crotoy-baie-de-somme.webp">

Parking area near the port of Le Crotoy. Photo: Raimond Spekking, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons.

A simple itinerary for a first stay

For a first experience, avoid multiplying the stages. Two or three nights are enough to understand if this mode of travel suits you. The goal is not to want to see everything, but to choose points that are easy to link.

Day 1:arrival in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, parking in the dedicated area, walk along the quays and in the upper town.

Day 2: Le Hourdel or Cayeux-sur-Mer depending on the tide, with checking of the parking and schedules before leaving.

Day 3: Le Crotoy or the Marquenterre Park, then return without planning a last stage that is too long.

If you only have a weekend, keep a main base and radiate around it. The guide motorhome in the Baie de Somme details the parking spots to check before arriving.

Checks before booking

Before booking, take the time to check a few practical points. Look at the vehicle, but also the practical conditions around the stay: pickup, inventory, insurance, options, equipment, security deposit, mileage, and return times.

Budget: what to consider in addition to the rental

The rental price is not enough to estimate the cost of the stay. Add fuel, tolls if you are coming from afar, parking, service areas, possible campgrounds, rental options, and meals. On a short stay, these expenses are sometimes underestimated.

To limit expenses, prepare a short itinerary and avoid unnecessary round trips. The Baie de Somme is often more pleasantly discovered with a few well-chosen stops than with a long loop that requires moving the vehicle several times a day.

Motorhome, vacation rental, or bed and breakfast: which to choose?

The motorhome is suitable if you like to move around and if you are willing to prepare the parking spots. A vacation rental is more comfortable for staying several days in the same place, especially with children. A bed and breakfast can be simpler for a short stay, with less logistics and sometimes useful advice on site.

Before choosing your accommodation, think about the type of stay you are looking for: mobile stay, quiet stay, weekend for two, family vacation, or nature stopover. The page where to sleep in the Baie de Somme helps to compare areas according to your way of traveling.

No. You need to distinguish between parking, service area, and authorized overnight stay. Some municipalities have dedicated areas, while other spaces may be reserved for temporary parking. Always check local rules.

Do you need to rent a large motorhome for a family?

Not necessarily. A large vehicle brings comfort, but it sometimes complicates access. For a first rental, look at the number of beds, the interior space, and the size before choosing.

Where to park a campervan in Baie de Somme: Saint-Valery-sur-Somme aire, services, prices, town parking and checks before arriving.

Coming to Baie de Somme by campervan takes a little planning, especially around Saint-Valery-sur-Somme. The bay is popular, and the older streets are not always easy with a large vehicle. It is better to know where to park before arriving.

If you do not own a vehicle, our guide to renting a campervan in Baie de Somme explains what to check before booking.

Before you leave, check what kind of place you are heading for. Some aires allow overnight stays with water or electricity. Other car parks are only useful for temporary parking and do not provide services. For several nights with toilets and electricity, you can choose a campsite rather than an aire. If you are visiting without a campervan, check our notes on car parking.

Information checked in May 2026: prices, services and rules can change. Before travelling, check the official town or tourist office page, especially in high season, at weekends and during events.

Saint-Valery-sur-Somme campervan aire: what to know

The Saint-Valery-sur-Somme campervan aire is located rue de la Croix l’Abbe, on the upper side of town. The town states that it is open all year and has capacity for around 200 vehicles. Water, outside frost periods, and electricity are included in the parking price.

Its main advantage is location. You remain close to Saint-Valery without driving into the most sensitive streets of the old centre. The tourist office indicates that the town centre and harbour can be reached on foot through the small streets of Saint-Valery.

Entry to the campervan aire is automatic, and payment is made when leaving. In case of difficulty, the town refers visitors to the municipal police.

Point to check

Saint-Valery-sur-Somme

Why it matters

Address

Rue de la Croix l’Abbe

Enter it directly in your GPS to avoid the old centre.

Opening

All year according to the town and tourist office

Check before leaving in case of works or temporary restriction.

Capacity

Around 200 vehicles according to the town

Good capacity, but visitor numbers can rise quickly in season.

Services

Water outside frost periods, electricity, paid parking

Useful to decide whether you are visiting only or staying overnight.

Payment

On exit, automatic entry

Allow for card payment and a little time during busy periods.

Prices: read the official table carefully

The town indicates a first free 15-minute period, valid once per day, then progressive pricing up to 12 euros for 8 hours and more, within a 24-hour limit. These amounts were shown on the official page checked in May 2026.

For a very short stop, the free 15 minutes may be enough to check information or leave if the aire does not suit you. For a real visit to Saint-Valery, think in terms of a day or overnight stay.

Do not confuse these prices with standard town parking. Saint-Valery also applies paid parking in urban spaces, with different rules, times and amounts. For a campervan, the dedicated aire is usually the clearest starting point.

Parking in town: what changes with a campervan

Saint-Valery is very pleasant on foot, but less simple with a large vehicle. The old centre, sloping streets, busy quays and crowded days can quickly make arrival more difficult.

The town states that paid parking applies in town every day of the year from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. It also mentions the canal car park as a free parking area with no time limit, open every day and 24 hours a day at the entrance to town.

For a campervan, check the exact access, height and usage conditions on site. A free car park is not automatically a service aire. In high season, the free La Sauterelle shuttle can also help you move around Saint-Valery without using the campervan again.

<img alt="Campervan pitches near Baie de Somme"/ loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://vacancesenbaiedesomme.fr/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/aire-camping-car-baie-de-somme-emplacements.webp">
Before settling in, check whether the place is a service aire, a paid parking area or a simple temporary car park.

Other aires around Baie de Somme

If Saint-Valery is full, or if your route works better from another side of the bay, the tourist office also lists options around the area, including Cayeux-sur-Mer, Eaucourt-sur-Somme, Mareuil-Caubert and Lancheres.

Services are not identical everywhere. Check whether you need water, electricity, waste disposal, overnight parking, or simply a place to stop for a few hours. The right choice depends on your plan for the day.

Checklist before arriving

check whether overnight parking is allowed;

check water, electricity and waste disposal services;

look at payment methods and maximum duration;

avoid entering the old centre without a clear route;

arrive earlier in high season and on weekends;

keep a backup option if your first choice is full.

Which area should you choose?

Saint-Valery The most practical choice if you want to visit the town, walk along the quays and avoid driving into the centre.

Cayeux and Le Hourdel Useful if your plan is the coast, the Route Blanche or seal watching from the observation area.

North of the bay More suitable if you plan to visit Le Crotoy, Rue or Parc du Marquenterre.

If your main aim is to visit Saint-Valery, the dedicated aire on rue de la Croix l’Abbe is the most straightforward option. If you want a wider nature route, look at Cayeux, Le Hourdel or the north side depending on your day plan.

For a wider stay, this article pairs well with our guides to where to stay in Baie de Somme, villages to visit and planning a weekend.

Common mistakes to avoid

The first mistake is trying to reach the old centre before deciding where to park. With a car, it can work. With a campervan, it can quickly become tiring, especially when traffic is heavy. Aim for the aire or a suitable car park from the start.

The second is confusing parking with services. A car park may accept your vehicle without offering water, electricity or waste disposal. A service aire may be right for a night, but less useful if you only need a twenty-minute stop.

The third is looking only at price. Walking distance, access, manoeuvring space and night-time calm also matter when choosing where to stop.

FAQ: campervan in Baie de Somme

Where is the Saint-Valery-sur-Somme campervan aire?

It is located rue de la Croix l’Abbe, on the upper side of town. According to the tourist office, the centre and harbour can be reached on foot.

Can you stay overnight at the Saint-Valery aire?

The aire is designed for campervans, open all year according to official sources, with prices up to 24 hours. Always check the conditions displayed on site before settling in for the night.

Are water and electricity available?

The town indicates that water, outside frost periods, and electricity are included in the parking price at the Saint-Valery campervan aire.

Can you park a campervan for free in Saint-Valery?

The town mentions the canal car park as free and open 24 hours a day, but this does not automatically replace a campervan service aire. For overnight stays or waste disposal, check the rules and use suitable places.

Do you need to book an aire in Baie de Somme?

It depends on the aire, the season and the operator. In high season, at weekends and on busy days, check conditions before arriving. For campsites and some private options, booking may be recommended.

Which aire should you choose to visit Saint-Valery?

For visiting Saint-Valery, the municipal aire on rue de la Croix l’Abbe is the most obvious choice because it avoids looking for a place in the centre and remains within walking distance of the harbour and town.
